As part of Bespoke Atelier, our printing company, we have our first piece of collaborated work exhibited at the Glasgow art Club and this for the next three weeks. It is a 4.5 metres piece of hand printed fabric which is situated in the main exhibition space downstairs. This exhibition organised by Deutsche Bank also features some great Scottish paintings.

Tomorrow its Robert Burns' day, Scotland National poet since 252 years! We're going to recite his poems while eating haggis, neeps and tatties, chouette! My friend Alison runs a fantastic website called Bonnie Bikes where she sells very cool cycling accessories. Last week she went to a charity fundraiser for cancer research 'Pedal it Pink'. I designed and hand printed a limited edition of T-shirts for this event. You can find the T-shirt here, £1 will be donated to cancer research.

Kids Workshop

A couple of weeks ago I went to work on a Trade show in France "Le Salon de L'Agriculture". I worked for one of the biggest French egg company, Matines. I created for them a kids activity workshop to decorate their eggs (see my 'how to' designs sheet above). One of the project was to transform the eggs into farm animals (pig, hen or cow). Oh, it was so successful! the kids were extremely creative, we had jaguars, lions, angels and other interesting creatures such as purple hens or red cows! We had such a fun time! I met many great kids and people, I can't believe how beneficial it was to experience such a different project from what I usually do,

I am back in Glasgow with many new exciting ideas and feel very motivated professionally! Genial!

The Life Wear Project

The Life Wear Project is my first book where I explain my process on designing and making. I broke it down chronologically, starting with historical and fashion research and finishing with how my ideas start to take shape as three dimensional garments shapes. Through that, I talk about what fashion is available on the market for parents and children or look at specific brand such as Petit Bateau who succeed to create clothes for a very broad range of ages. I also show that my inspiration can come from other sources such as films or architecture. It is a very personal vision on what I am designing and how I go about it. Furthermore, the aesthetic of the book should explain the content without having to read the whole text. The way I've placed images, their size and the colour codes are aimed at a quick understanding of my main points. Also, transparent papers with annotations are placed through the book to give quick explanations of key images. The graphics and the different papers used throughout the book are inspired from my drawings, colour and fabric research. This is the first part of three volumes inspired by a daily journal that I am writing as part of my course.

The Berlin Wall : 20 years later

Today Germany is celebrating the 20 years anniversary of the fall of the wall. For this occasion I took part in a competition organised by easyjet where I was ask to illustrate the event. It represents the map of Berlin in the background, the black ribbon embodies the wall being open by two white doves. Above it all I've drawn a flight of birds with through them, the colour of the german flag. Let me know if you like it!

Anorak Competition

I took part in a competition organised by my favourite magazine, Anorak. The brief was to design the magazine cover for the winter issue and it was open to students or recents graduates from all around the world. My design represents a circular grid in the background to illustrate game with snowflakes in some of the boxes (a winter board game!) and on the foreground an army of happy kids all laughing away and saying 'the happy mag for kids'. Even though it's a winter issue, the colours are bright and playful for a celebration of this holiday and festive period of the year. Let me know if you like it!

Second City with Marco Bernardi

Next Saturday Second City is coming back! I've been asked to design the poster again, check out! I've drawn the front of a record shop in Paris called Stereorama, spray painted the pattern from the shutter and stamp the name of our DJ on it. Now we have our own Second City shop! Anyway, last month we had a great time, I am so looking forward to next week!

Exclusive handprinted fabric

I spent the start of the week printing a new range of fabric with 3 other designers, Iain, Vala and Clemence. The reknown boutique K1 Yarns based in Glasgow and Edimburgh has launched with us an exclusive range of fabric under the name of K1 Cloth. A couple of months ago, we printed for the summer the first collection based around the combination of three colours and three designs. For this autumn collection we hand dyed our fabric with mushroom, grey, and nude tones and screen printed three designs in teals, aubergine and blues.

The fabric will be on sale soon.

New Designers - London

Last month I went to New Designers with my class. It was an amazing week, I met loads of interesting people from companies, universities and schools. They gave me plenty of feedback, advice about my work and I got interest for work and sold a sample. The following week I went to a few interviews resulting with the show and I am now working freelance for an agent/textile studio in London.

I am also getting ready to start in september the Masters at Glasgow School of Art Textiles as Fashion for a year.

As you know I haven't posted in sooo long! This is only because I am graduating in a few weeks ( 3 to go now). The work load had been increasing like crazy but it's going well, can't wait to hand in! Also, I kind of want to keep my work as a surprise for the show which is why I am not posting new stuff. However to give you an idea here is one of my sample still to be made into a final piece (print and embroidery with black silk ribbon on calico).

This is a drawing of a builing that I did yesterday. It is reversible, you can walk into this maison from top or bottom, look for it in Paris!
Then I transformed it that way,
and maybe it could be come an embroidery that could be like a trim, an edge, une bordure. I am going to embroider it today.

Couple inconnu

Yesterday I embroidered this couple (drawing at the top, embroidery at the bottom) who is the starting point of a story, a narrative for my project. I think the duality that they represent is a current theme in my work that I am going to follow. I still need to cut the circle and stitch it onyo a heavy ticking cotton. voila!

This is the inside of a shop Place D'Aligre in PAris, near Bastille. This little epicerie is amazing, from muesli, pasta, sweets, plants to birds and baskets... You'll find everything. On week ends you can find a huge market, for fruits, food to old stuff, this shop is then even busier. The guys are really friendly, pop by and say hello!

Chaise Longue

The Chaise Longue (not a deck chair, a chaise longue in Francais!) in Paris are scattered around the Canal St Martin during the summer months. Keep going after the cinemas and you'll find a very enjoyable bank. You can grab a drink at one of the cafes, take it with you on the side of the water and enjoy it on your chaise longue. Watch out for the men playing the boules, you don't want to interfere with their game, they would throw you their cochonet! (which is not their baby piglet but the tiny ball in the game!)

New Earrings!

New range of earrings created from vintage french buttons. I have always been collecting buttons but recently I acquired an amazing amount (about two truck loads!) from a knitting factory which just closed down back in France, in my

mum's village. They are absolutely gorgeous as the type of knitwear created by this company was of a very high quality, then they also used fantastic buttons! the designs go from sophisticated shapes, engraved motifs, faceted surfaces, marble effects, sprinkled textures... Nearly every single colour is available from bright to muted shades and many of one type comes in different colours and shapes. How amazing is that? I am so excited about it, I can't stop playing with them! Just now I have been making rings and earrings (silver plated backing by the way!). Available on Etsy! x

Last saturday we were at Made in the Shade, at the Lighthouse. We had a great time, we hope you did too. Here is a picture of our lovely Ruth in her hand made polky dot dress (If you fancy one of those fantastic killer outfit or one of her cool t-shirt let her know at ruth@ruthansell.co.uk)

We also had tea cup candles, french vintage buttons rings and earrings, berets, headbands, feather headpieces. My other friend Jemima put some of her jewellery on display and launched a new exciting range of printed scarfs. How exciting!!

The Glasgow Craft Mafia, in conjunction with the Creative Entrepreneurs Club at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City have launched a new, exciting and unconventional indie market, right in the heart of Glasgow’s mainstream shopping hub. Made In The Shade (a slang phrase, popular in the 1950s and synonymous with guaranteed success, or a truly swell situation) launches in Gallery 5 of The Lighthouse, Mitchell Lane off Buchanan Street on Saturday 24^th May from 10.30am – 5pm. A double celebration, the 24^th May also marks the first Saturday of The Lighthouse ‘going free’ and the launch of their tours, workshops and events programme for families and individuals!

Glasgow School of Art Fashion Show

This is my collection for the GSA fashion show 2008. I've embroidered the fabric and created the clothes getting inspired by 50's swimwear and circus costumes.

The red Lycra catsuit and swimming cap are embroidered with little velvet rosettes and the black shawl is smocked. The organdy silk yellow dress is also smocked at the front, the belt and the hairband are embroidered with silk organdy flowers. Finally, the dungarees are hand embroidered with a fly stitch with silk ribbon, the red top is embroidered with hundreds of flat balloons.

GSA fashion show

Next week, the 4th and 5th of march, it is all happening! My class and I are organizing the Glasgow School of Art Fashion Show 2008. Each of us is creating a collection of three outfits on the theme 'avant-garde'. We got the help of a brilliant fashion designer, Julian Roberts.

Marionette products will be on sale at the boutique of the show, in the vic bar. You can get tickets for the show at tickets scotland or at the vic bar of the art school.

Before I could leave for France for my christmas holidays, I had to produce a fair amount of teacup candles. It was nice to bring some back to my family, they looked great on my gran's xmas table! As you can see, my workshop is set in my wee kitchen, between the plants and the kettle! No secrets, I make them one by one with all my love and attention so they become fantastic little pressies! I hope you all had a teacup candle under your tree!
